QUICKIE OVERVIEW

At first thought, choosing a personal lubricant should be easy, right? I mean, what could possibly be the difference between one or another? But picking the right one should really take some consideration on your part.

Personal lubricants are typically sought after by women who encounter some degree of vaginal dryness.  Primarily during sex.  Because friction between two people, well, just plain stinks.  Both men & woman also turn to personal lubricants for masturbating, women even using it for a daily moisture boost.

So just grab a tube or bottle of any ol’ lube, right? I think not.  The choice isn’t just that (pardon the pun) cut & dry….

Lubricants come in a large variety of types.  Water-based, oil-based, silicone-based, fertility, hybrids,  flavored, tingly, anal or gender specific- and the list goes on… Then there is also the quality factor… Not all lubricant brands are created equal.  Who woulda thunk it would take so much brainpower to decide?

I’d love to make your selection voyage easier for you.  I’ll be creating a series of posts that will go over all areas of Lube 101-  helping you to determine which product will suit you and your lubricant needs best.

So without further ado- here’s the first, and most basic, personal lubricant choices-

Water-Based Lubes vs. Silicone-Based Lubes

Water-Based Lubricants
Water based lubes are the most widely available lube on the market and are water soluble  (dissolves in water).  Many of these lubricants (especially those you can purchase in drugstores)  contain cellulose or glycerine solutions- which have been found to promote yeast infections, especially not fun if you are susceptible to them.  Good news is, there are now many of these higher quality water-based lubes that have omitted those ingredients.

Water-Based Pros:

  • typically least expensive
  • many women find water-based lubes to be the closest feeling to their natural lubrication
  • easiest clean-up… do not stain
  • safe to use with condoms, sex toys and cervical caps, diaphragms etc.
  • usually tasteless, also available in flavored options

Water-Based Con’s:

  • can contain cellulose or glycerine- thus promoting yeast and bacterial growth
  • have a tendency to dry out quickly when using- thus the need for re-application is common
  • can leave a “sticky” residue
  • not effective in the water

I just adore the Pink® line of personal lubes…

It actually moisturizes your skin with Aloe, Elastin, Collagen and Vitamin E while providing gentle, non-irritating lubrication that stays in place. Because it moisturizes, you can leave it on after you’re finished playing!

JO H2O is long lasting and washes off easily with water. A silky, smooth feeling, never sticky or tacky. JO H2O is 100% latex safe and manufactured under strict U.S FDA guidelines. Glycerin-Free.    It enhances your sense of pleasure like no other water-based lubricant.

Silicone-Based Lubricants
Silicone-based lubes are beginning to become a favorite choice for many. Although more expensive than their water-based counterpart- they tend to offer a silkier, more desirable sensation for the users.

Silicone-Based Pros:

  • not absorbed by the skin and will last a much longer than water-based lubes
  • does not contain water- will not dry out… usually a little goes a long way (possibly making up for the higher price tag because you’ll use a lot less product)
  • can usually be used with condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms etc.
  • work wonderfully in water- pools, showers, tubs, lakes, rivers (I’m sure you get the point… 😉 )
  • typically don’t cause allergic reactions or skin irritations

Silicone-Based Con’s

  • usually NOT sex toy compatible (especially silicone toys- as the lubricant adheres with the silicone toy, makes it sticky,  and breaks down the material)
  • not all silicone-based lubes are latex safe (for condoms and birth control devices).  make sure to check labels.
  • many times more expensive than the water-based choices- but as mentioned above, lasts longer/ doesn’t dissolve, so you’ll typically use a lot less
